Erosional Landforms + Patterdale Flashcards
Corrie
- A hollow is deepened by nivation
- plucking+ abrasion of glacier forms a steep black wall
- water goes down the back of the glacier (bergschrund) encouraging freeze thaw
- a rocklip forms and moraine gets added to it, creating a tarn
e.g. Red Tard
Arête
corries erodes backwards through plucking and abrasion
back wall becomes steeper and a steep ridge is left
e.g. striding edge
Pyramidal Peak
three or more corries and arêtes meet and carve out the top of the mountain leaving a pointy peak
U shaped valley
Glacier descends down a valley and scours the sides leaving a u shaped valley
e.g. Patterdale Valley
Ribbon Lake
Glacier moves over hard and soft rock
rock basin gets formed
hard rock is eroded less and rainwater fills up the rock basin forming a ribbon lake
e.g. Ullswater
Hanging valley
two glacial valley meet and the smaller one is eroded less, leaving it hanging above the main valley as water flows over the edge
e.g. Helvellyn
Roche Mountonee
Glacier meets with a rock and advances over it. plucking occurs and fragments are removed leaving a jagged rock behind
Misfit Stream
A river too small to have eroded the valley in which is flows
truncated spurs
glacier moves through a river with interlocking spurs and plucking and abrasion happens eroding the tips of them, leaving truncated spurs behind
Fjord
When glacial erosion happens below sea level and when the glacier retreats the valley is filled with water
