erosional and depositional landforms Flashcards
Headlands and bays:
Formed when there are bands of different rock with different resistance to erosion
Bands of rock lie perpendicular to coastline
Cliffs:
Variations of geological structure
Landward and seaward dipping
Spits (depositional)
Prevailing wind causes longshore drift, sediment is then deposited at the mouth of a river
Beach (depositional)
Eroded by cliffs, rivers and seabeds, material can consist of sand or pebbles
90 percent of beach material comes from rivers
Beach cusps (depositional)
Different directions of waves meet and form a cusp
Onshore bar (depositional)
Bay- longshore drift cuts off the body of water from the ocean
Offshore bars (depositional)
Waves erode sediment from beach by backwash and deposits the sediment further offshore
