Erosion Vocab Flashcards
Erosion
Erosion is the geological process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water.
weathering
Weathering is the deterioration of rocks, soils and minerals
water cycle
a biogeochemical cycle that describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth.
evaporation
Evaporation is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gas phase.
condensation
Condensation is the change of the state of matter from the gas phase into the liquid phase, and is the reverse of vaporization.
precipitation
the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution.
surface runoff
precipitation runoff over the landscape.
tributary
a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake.
watershed
the area of land where all of the water that drains off of it goes into the same place—a river, stream or lake.
continental divide
continental divide is a drainage divide on a continent such that the drainage basin on one side of the divide feeds into one ocean or sea.
deposition
the action of deposing someone, especially a monarch.
delta
a buildup of sediment occurs at river mouths.
floodplain
A floodplain or flood plain or bottomlands is an area of land adjacent to a river which stretches from the banks of its channel
water table
The water table is the upper surface of the zone of saturation.
sewage treatment plants
Sewage treatment is a type of wastewater treatment which aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable for discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application.
