Erosion & Deposition Flashcards
What is weathering ?
Weathering is the process of how rocks are formed, or how rocks are chemically changed after a reaction while staying attached to the rock. The two main types of weathering is mechanical and chemical. Mechanical is when rock or minerals break off into smaller fragments. Additionally, chemical weathering changes the composition and physical characteristics of the substance. Weathering changes the sediment to make erosion easier.
What is erosion?
Erosion is when sediments are broken down. There are four main types of erosion, wind, water, ice, and gravity. For example, small pieces of rock are torn away slowly and moved to a different location.
How does Karst erode rocks?
Chemical erosion
What is deposition
Deposition is when sediment settles to its location creating a sedimentary rock, for example, limestone. The four main types of deposition are wind, water, ice, and gravity.
How does Karst weather rocks?
Karst weathers rock by, frost action where water freezes and the volume of the ice presses against the rock making it smaller.
