Erosion Flashcards
EROSION
The breaking down of rocks, pebbles and shingle
HYDRAULIC ACTION
When waves crash against the cliff, compressing the water and air into the cracks and forcing them apart. A repeated process that weakens and breaks our cliffs. It could also happen suddenly in a storm
ABRASION
When waves pick up rocks from the sea bed or beach and smash them against the cliff. A fine (sandpaper) process that takes years to erode cliffs and rocks
ATTRITION
When sand and pebbles are picked up by the sea and smashed against each other, wearing them down into smaller and more rounded particles. When the rocks and pebbles are thrown together, it takes a long time
CORROSION
When minerals such as calcium carbonate (the main part of chalk and limestone rocks) are slowly dissolved in sea water. It’s a chemical reaction that wears down the rock away because the water is slightly acidic
WEATHERING AND MASS MOVEMENT
The gradual collapse of a hillside, under its own weight. Slumping sometimes occurs where an UNCONSOLIDATED rock glides over an impermeable rock type, such as clay. The impact is along the coastline, along the rock edge, slumping and crumbling under its own weight
