Drainage Basins And Flooding Flashcards
TRIBUTARY
A small river/ streams into the main river channel
SOURCE OF THE RIVER
It is a big/ sponge filled with water, the start of the river
MAIN RIVER CHANNEL
The main river, usually the longest and widest part
CONFLUENCE
Where two it more river’s meet. This is where flooding often occurs
RAINFALL
The amount and type of rainfall affects a river’s discharge. Antecedent rainfall is rain that already happens. This could mean the he ground is saturated so the water becomes run off into the river. Heavy Continual rain means more water flowing into the river
WEATHER CONDITIONS
Hot, dry weather can bake the soil so rain water runs straight off into the river. High temperatures increase evaporation rates, reducing discharge. Long periods of extreme cold can lead the frozen ground so rain cannot sink in
VEGETATION
Leaves intercept rainfall and delay run off to the river. EVAPOTRANSPIRATION reduces the amount of water reaching the river. Roots delay through flow of water to the river. Roots also take up water and therefore reduce the amount entering the river
RIVER DISCHARGE
The amount of water in a river at any given point and time discharge is measured in Cumecs Cubic metres per second
ANNUAL REGIME
Also known as river regime. On a graph, if it shows how the river discharge changes throughout the year, then the pattern shown of flow is known as the river regime
