Birth - 1 year
+ Warmth, affection and consistency of care lead 2 a solid secure attachment w/the primary caregiver(usually the mother)
- Inadequate care results in fear and a lack of confidence. This stage is the prototype 4 all future relationships, those w/a primarily negatively resolution 2 this stage may struggle w/forming close relationships 4 the rest of their lives. Extremely inadequate care may result in significant developmental problems.
Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust

1 - 2 or 3 yrs old
+ If a child is permitted and encouraged 2 do things 4 themselves, w/some adult guidance, a sense of independence or self-determination develop
- A lack of self-confidence and dependence develops
Stage 2: Autonomy vs Doubt and Shame

3 - 5 or 6
+ Curiosity, physical exploration and high energy are typical of pre-schoolers. An endless stream of questions is typical during this time.
- Negative parental responses 2 these behaviors can lead 2 a sense of culpability and lack of resourcefulness
Stage 3: Initiative vs Guilt

5/6-11/12 yrs
This stage is crucial 2 the dvelopment in competence and self-confidence
+ success in meeting the demands of school and society lead 2 a sense of industry or self-confidence
- repeated failures lead 2 feelings of inferority and an unwillingness 2 try new tasks
Stage 4: Industry vs Inferiority

adolescence 12-18 yrs
They fluctuate between independence and control to insecure and confused. They r trying 2 discover who they r or who they want 2 b.
+ They need encouragement and reinforcement. If they r successful they learn 2 live by society’s rules
- failure leads 2 insecurity and confusion and a rebellion 2 society rules
Stage 5: Identity vs Role Confusion

Early adulthood
Success in the previous stage is crucial 2 a successful resolution of this stage
+ the young adult experiences true intimacy which is the foundation 4 a future marriage and lasting friendships
- failure causes isolation and despair
Stage 6: Intimacy vs Isolation
1 of Erickson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development
Middle adulthood 30-60 yrs
Focus is on the ability 2 give of 1’s self in career and family, a general wanting to contribute 2 society.
+ Success leads 2 becoming active in the home and community.
- Failure leads 2 becoming unproductive, uninvolved, self-absorped and the inability 2 give of 1’s self
Stage 7: Generatively vs Self-Absorption

Later adulthood/ old age 60+
If the previous psychosocial crises have been successfully resolved they develop a sense of integrity and reflect back on 1’s life 2 determine if they r happy or have regret
+ They c their lives as successful and worthwhile and r proud of their work and families
- Failure leads 2 feelings of a wasted time, bitterness, despair and the realization that it is 2 late 2 start over
Stage 8: Integrity vs Despair
