Eric Birling Flashcards
Priestley’s Ideas:
At first, used to symbolise how capitalists abuse power over working class - rape represents how capitalists figuratively ‘rape’ poor.
Eric does change: symbol to represent younger generation and socialism, give audience hope that society can improve if we take responsibility for our actions.
‘Why shouldn’t they try for higher wages?’
Acts a dramatic irritant to Mr B, challenging his ideology.
Eric is odd-one-out in family - cares about lower classes, voicing his opinions.
Less money-obsessed, maybe he thinks of himself as rebellious - Mr B does not like this, greatly affects chances of taking over company.
‘Because you’re not the kind of father a chap would go to when he’s in trouble’
Illustrates distant and tense relationship between Eric and his father - implies he doesn’t feel completely comfortable and trusting towards his father. Could suggest other father figures who he felt more comfortable with talking to about his innermost secrets.
‘You killed her’
However much change we see in Eric throughout play, still passing blame on Mrs B - capitalist views.
‘I don’t care now’
Adverb ‘now’ - suggests was a point when highly regarded his father’s opinions of him, but after events of night have occurred, begins to resent him. Shows development in relationship; began with high levels of respect, now almost unfixable.
‘Squiffy’
Weak and emotional character so drinks to take away feelings - makes his transformation more realistic.
Hints at irresponsible behaviour to come with Eva.
