Eric Birling Flashcards
‘He could. He could have kept her on instead of throwing her out. I call it tough luck’
Eric doesn’t agree with what his father did to Eva Smith by getting her sacked because he refused to pay her and the other workers the 25 shillings that they deserved.
‘Why shouldn’t they try for higher wages?’
Eric agrees with the Inspector and he is going against his father’s choices of underpaying his workers.
‘I hate these fat old tarts round the town’
Eric is being disrespectful towards women.
‘So I insisted on giving her enough money to keep her going - until she refused to take any more’
He is more morally strong and more respectful than the Birling family because he is owning up to his own actions unlike Mr Birling who lies.
‘Because your not the kind of father a chap could go to when he’s in trouble - that’s why’
Eric is standing up to his father.
‘And I say the girl’s dead and we all helped to kill her - and that’s what matters’
Eric is taking responsibility.
‘You lot may be letting yourselves out nicely, but I can’t.’
This is actually worse because they could have done it to totally different girls each time which causes affects on the other girls life’s.
