ergonomics Flashcards
definition
ergo= work, nomics= law, “fitting the physical woekspace to the worker” (Kraus)
Majority of injuries
overexertion- outside 25%, falls- same level 15%, struck by object 0%, falls to lower level 8.6%
How PT involved with ergonomics
- our own safety during transfers, lifting, standing, repetitive activities,
- our understanding of human performance and musculoskeletal disorders makes us ideal consultants
Role of PT in ergonomics
- exam (workplace, worker)
- eval (productivity, health and safety)
- recommend preventative strategies
- rehab injured worker
- assist with return to work
Functional Capacity Eval- FCE
designed to systematically analyzr the workers ability and capacity to execute their work tasks
FCE Guidelines
indications: no plateau/ progress, obj vs subj, difficulty return to work
contraindic: medical instability, unable to communicate/ understand instructions
target variables: body mech, ROM, strength, endurance, pace, coordination, balance
special consid: pain is not contraindicated if inactive >4wks
FCE Proceudre
take Hx, perform pre-eval screen, perform funct. test, interpret results, prepare a report
Video DIsplay and Eye Strain
25” form computer to eye, eyes should gaze down at screen, lighting, “20-20-20” rule (every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 ft away for 20s), “Blink!” post-it note, artificial tears, regular breaks
General recommendation to prevent overuse syndromes
regular rest breaks, switch tasts often while working, frequent change in posture, minimize contact w/ sharp objects, rest eyes frequently, minimize the forces you generate, keep hands warm
General recommen d for long driving
adjust seat angle (110’), good suspension, adjust seat, steering for comfortable pedal use, lumbar support, tilt seat every 20-30 minutes to alter vibration location, adjust mirrors when in proper seat
