1
Q
What is ergonomics?
A
- Ergonomics is the Science of Work
- Fitting the Task to the Human
- The branch of science that deals with the people and their working environment
2
Q
Principles of ergonomics?
A
- Work in neutral postures
- Reduce excessive force
- Keep everything within reach
- Work at proper height
- Reduce excessive motions
- Minimize fatigue and static load
- Minimise pressure points
- Provide clearance (clear the area) 9. Move, exercise and stretch
- Maintain a comfortable environment (e.g. lightening, cool air etc.)
3
Q
Risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders?
A
- Compression, vibration, forceful exertions (lifting, pushing, pinching,
gripping) - cold temperatures (<68 degrees cause nerve damage)
- static postures
- awkward postures (non-neutral)
- Repetition
- inadequate recovery

- Back injuries
- Facet joint pain; disc erosion, Sciatic nerve impingement (sciatica), Herniated discs - Musculoskeletal injuries
- Low back pain, strain, sprain - Tendon disorders
- Rotator Cuff syndrome, DeQuervain’s disease, tendinitis {Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow); Medial epicondylitis (Golfers elbow)}, tenosynovitis (Trigger finger), ganglion cysts
