Fletcher vs. Peck
Era of Good Feeling- 1810
o Case involving land fraud in Georgia supreme court. establishes that State cannot pass law invalidating a contract.
o 1st time that supreme court declares state law unconstitutional.
o Marshal proclaims that contract between private individuals is sacrosanct (Into the 20th century, this precedent is used to uphold morally questionable contracts, like child labor)
Dartmouth vs. Woodward
Era of Good feeling (Early 1800s)
o NH wanted to make Darthmouth a public college
o Marshall said no since there was contract for it to be private. Significane: contracts are sacrosanct
Gibbons vs. Ogden
Era of Good feeling 1824
o Ogden is ferry owner-Makes contract with NY state which gives him monopoly
o Gibbins wants to start a new ferry, and sues NY for giving ogden monopoly
o Marshall sides with gibbins because its interstate commerce and only the fed. Can regulate this.
-The federal gov’s stretching of the Interstate commerce clause sets precedent for future (like making southern hotels and gas stations serve blacks)
James Monroe
Era of Good feeling -1817
A Democrat-Republican
5th president (very popular) who toured each state
- won with little opposition from federalists
• Virginian who was Madisons secretary of state
Fulton’s Steamboat
Era of Good feelings- 1811
- perfected by Robert Fulton.
- His 1st ship is called the clearmont. —Famously shows it off to country, riding it up Hudson river from NY city to Albany
- Boosts trade
Eerie Canal
Era of Good Feelings 1817
-prominent canal connecting Hudson to lake Eerie (which means that it connected Great lakes to Atlantic)
Significance: Economic/trade Boom for cities along the canal. NY becomes most important city
Protective Tariff
Era of Good Feelings- 1816
- The Tarrif of 1816 was an increase in tariffs led by clay
- It protected American industry so northerners liked it but farmers (=southerners/westerners) hated it because they felt it did not benefit them and just made products more expensive
Second Bank of the US
Era of Good Feelings- 1816
- Clay rechartered the Hamilton’s 1st national bank (whose charter had run out) with a permanent charter
- National Bank- had become controversial since the West and South felt it symbolized evil eastern city rich people selfishly manipulating economy, so a permanent charter was necessary to ensure its continuation

1812-1819
Era of peace, nationalism, and economic prosperity between war of 1812 and Panic of 1819 (=economic failure)
- The President, Monroe, a Dem-Republican, gained power with little Federalist opposition
- Lots of cultural nationalism propagated by writers and painters
- Time of Early industrialism
Cumberland Road (National Road)
Era of Good Feelings- 1811
First major highway built by the federal government
Useful for transportation and commerce
Sets precedent for Federal government investing in infrastructure (which is favored by West and North and opposed by South)
Andrew Jackson-Florida
1818- Era of Good Feelings
- Violent Seminole Indians, pirates and slaves would escape to Florida and make trouble for the US
- President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson to protect the border with Florida
-Jackson used this as an excuse to invade Florida
-Known as the Seminole War, but in fact Jackson attacked the spanish and British Pirates
-Spanish decide to sell florida to US as part of the Adams-Onis treaty
(Adams is John Quincy Adams (Secretary of State))

- Spanish give Florida to US (after Seminole War in which Andrew Jackson attacks florida)
- Sets out boundary between US and mexico
Missouri Compromise
1820, Era of Good Feelings
- Missouri wants to join Union as slave state, this threatens to upset balance between slave states and free states
- Heated Debate
- Compromise: Missouri would come in as a slave state, but Massachusetts would be divided, creating a new free state called Maine also, any future new state North of the Southern border would be free and South of the Southern border (Mason-Dixon Line) would be slave
- This makes slave debate erupt
