Equipment Familiarisation Flashcards
Oropharyngeal Airway (OPA)
Airway adjunct extending from the lips to the pharynx
designed to displace the tongue to prevent airway occlusion.
OPA Insertion
- Size airway by measuring from center incisors to the angle of the jaw
- Insert the airway upside down with the concave facing the floor of the mouth
- once airway is one third into mouth, rotate 180 degrees and continue insertion until the phalanges is against the lips
Nasopharangeal Airway (NPA)
Airway adjunct extending from nostril to nasopharynx
Particularly useful when there is oral trauma or patient has an intact gag reflex but requires airway protection
NPA Insertion
- Size the airway by measuring from the tip of the nose to the earlobe
- Face the bevel of the NPA medially and insert into the nostril, twisting for ease of insertion unitl the bevel sits flush with the nostril
- Lubrication may be required
Oxygen Masks - Bag Valve mask (BVM)
Flow rate and use
Flow rate of 15L/min
Used for intermittent positive pressure ventilation as result of bradypnoea or sever respiratory compromise with inadequate ventilation
delivers 100% O2 when reservoir bag inflated
Mask can be inflated/deflated to suit need of patient
Oxygen Masks - Nebulizer mask
Flow rate and use
Flow rate of 6-8 L/min
Designed for the delivery of nebulized medication
Oxygen Masks - Non rebreather mask (NRB)
Flow rate and use
Flow rate 10-15L/min
used for maximal oxygenation
delivers 100% O2 when reservoir bag inflated
Oxygen Masks - Simple (Hudson) face mask (SFM)
Flow rate and use
Flow rate of 2-4L/min
Used for mild oxygenation
Delivers 60% O2
Oxygen Masks - Nasal Prongs
Flow rate and use
Flow rate of 2-4L/min
Used for mild oxygenation and for conditions that require constant low level oxygenation
Suction unit
Yankeur suction catheter
Y suction catheter
Yankeur suction catheter is a rigid suction device used to suction the airways of adults and older children who have fully formed soft palette
Y suction catheter s a flexible suction tube used to suction the airways of small children and infants who are at risk of oral trauma from rigid suction devices
- Content of the airway suctioning are stored in a container on the side of the oxygen kit
Oxygen cylinder
D size oxygen cylinder containing ~340L of pressurized medical oxygen
Valve on top of the bottle has a regulator that can be adjusted for different flow rates ranging from 0.5L/min to 25L/min
Airway Kit - Laryngoscope
Two varieties
Endoscope designed for visualization of the larynx
Used to assist with clearing the airway, insertion of endotracheal tube and insertion of gastric tube
Two varieties:
- Macintosh blade - curved and is used for adults with sizes ranging from 2-4
- Miller blade is straight and intended for pediatric use with sizes 0 and 1
Airway Kit - Laryngeal mask airway (LMA)
Advanced airway device consisting of tubing attached to an inflatable cuff
Designed so inflated mask seals over laryngeal inlet
Airway Kit - Magill Forceps
Curved forceps designed to aid with the removal of foreign objects from the airway
Primary Response Kit - Bandages
Israeli Trauma Bandage
Bandages are used for hemorrhage control, fracture support, immobilization and compression
Israeli Trauma Bandage - designed to control large arterial hemorrhages (includes a primary dressing, pressure applicator, secondary dressing and securing device)
