Capillary Tube
To Fill:
- Top open end touches blood (not skin)
- Blood is suctioned into tube
- Block bottom end with finger to control amount
- Get required amount
- Seal with clay sealant
- Centrifuge for plasma
- if air bubble, tilt rear down & unblock to get the bubble out of top end.
Centrifugation
Starts blood clotting.
Dermal Puncture Site:
Incision width & depth:
W: 2.4 mm D: 2.0 mm
Mid-finger/Ring Finger of non dominant hand on anyone twelve months and older. ( \ / ) not ( / \ ).
Medial/lateral side of heel on anyone younger than twelve months.

Capillary blood
Venipuncture:
Needle, tube holder, tube, alcohol pad, cotton, gauze, bandage, sharps container, gloves, tourniquet. (syringe/transfer device)
Glucose testing:
Lancet, glucose test strip, glucose analyzer machine, alcohol pad, cotton, gauze, bandage, sharps container, gloves.
Capillary test:
Lancet, capillary tube, clay sealant, alcohol pad, cotton, gauze, bandage, sharps container, gloves, hematocrit centrifuge.
Bleeding time test:
Lancet, alcohol pad, cotton, gauze, bandage, sharps container, gloves, blood pressure set, timer, filter paper.
Gloves should be removed if:
Soiled with blood, after contact with patient, if damaged or torn.
Touniquet:
3-4 inches above site.
No more than 60 sec on.
Needle:
Point, bevel, lumen, shaft, and hub.
Smaller Guage:
Larger Lumen.
Larger Guage:
Smaller Lumen.
Point:
Part of needle that is sharp.
Bevel:
Opening of needle in which the blood passes through.
