Equine lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the three types of muscle tissue
Smooth, cardiac, and skeletal
Characteristics muscle fibers
Contractile
Oxidative capacity
Type I -> red, endurance
Type II -> white, sprint
Characteristics tendon
Type I collagen
Bundles of longitudinally oriented collagen microfibrils
Strength is increased by cross-linking between overlapping collagen molecules
Crimp contributes to the elasticity
What does blood contain
Plasma and cells (water, protein, electrolytes, nutrients, waste products, gases, and hormones)
Red blood cells (haemoglobin, produced in bone marrow, broken down by the spleen, contraction of the spleen doubles red blood cell circulation)
Key requirements for performance
Coordination
Strength
Speed
Endurance/stamina
Flexibility
