Q

Chronic heel pain

A

This can cause heel pain that will get worse after being on hard ground and present uni-or-bilaterally. There are a lot of structures that can cause this pain. Although usually slow in onset, it can be acute if it is caused by an injury to the collateral suspensory ligament or the sesamoid impar ligaments. This point can come from the navicular structures (bone, apparatus, synovial membrane around it) P3 itself, the hoof capsule in the heel region, the distal interphalangeal joint and the DDFT. It is pretty common accounting for 1/3rd of all equine lameness! If you guess this you may just be right.
