Equine Breeding Mgmt. - FUNK Flashcards
Things to evaluate during physical excam for breeding soundness (4)
1. Conformation of feet - can her feet physically support the weight of a pregnancy?
2. BCS - negative energy balance? overweight?
3. Vulvar conformation (angle of vulve + amt that is below tuber ischii) - if malconformed, -> contamination of uterus (air, feces), infection (endometritis, placentitis), uterine scarring (fibrosis, decr. pregnancy rates)
4. Rectal palpation - location, sice & tone of: uterus, ovaries, servix; size of pelvic canal
want vulva as upright as possible; want high tuber iscii
uterine/cervical tone during diestrus versus estrus
Diestrus: firm
Estrus: uterine = moderate, cervix = relaxed (need it “cushioned” for sperm transport)
During U/S exam, the more visualized uterine edema = the futher you are in what stage?
Estrus (more E2 = more edema)
Purpose of speculum exam
visualize the cranial vagina + the cervix
What stage of Estrus is each photo?
Stage of Estrus
1. cervix sitting in middle of vagina (diestrus)
2. transition (either into our out of estrus)
3. Estrus -> soft cervix relaxed on vaginal floor
Mare in Diestrus - what to expect on palpation / ultrasound
CL on ovary (bright white), tone uterus & cervix
Mare in Estrus - what to expect on palpation / ultrasound
growing -> dominant follicle, milkd -> increased uterine edema, soft/relaxed cervix that starts to fall to vaginal floor
Uterine and cervical tone scale
1 = firm
2 = moderate
3 = soft
uterine edema scale
1 = slight
2 = moderate
3 = marked
4 = excess
