Equillibrium II Flashcards
Define dynamic equilibrium
Occurs when forward and backward reactions are at the same rate, and concentrations of reactants and products stay constant.
how do you calculate the moles of reactant at equillibrium?
- initial - reacted moles
How do you calculate moles of product at equillibrium?
initial + moles formed
Why can the pink colour of phenolphthalein fade after the end-point reaction between ethanoic acid and ethanol?
- addition of NaOH may cause equillibrium to shift towards to the reactants side.
What change in conditions would change Kp and Kc?
Temperature ONLY
What is the effect of a catalyst on Kc and Kp?
NO EFFECT - speeds up the rate of the forward and backward reactions by the same amount.
What is a way to improve atom economy and yield for a reaction?
Recycling the unreacted reactants back into the reactor.
Why are industrial processes not in equillibrium?
- because products are removed as they are formed, and they are not in closed systems.
What are the conditions needed to have a reaction in dynamic equilibrium?
- closed system
- ## has to be reversible
