Equilibrium Constants Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium ?
The rate of the forward reaction is the same as the reverse/ backward reaction
What factors affect the position of equilibrium?
Concentration
Temperature
Pressure
Why doesn’t a catalyst affect the rate of equilibrium ?
It speeds up both the forward and backwards reaction by the same amount.
Equilibrium is only reached faster
State Le Chatelier’s Principle
If a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change then the position of equilibrium will shift to minimise the change
Wha can you tell about the reaction when assessing the position of equilibrium?
If the position of equilibrium is over to the LHS then this means there are more reactants than products
RHS = more products than reactants
How is Kc Calculated?
[C]c [D]d
————-
[A]a [B]b
What factors affect the value of Kc ?
Kc is temperature dependent. Only temp affects the value,it isn’t affected by change in pressure, concentration or a catalyst.
How can you wok out the position of equilibrium from Kc?
If Kc «_space;equilibrium lies to the left
Kc»_space; 1 equilibrium lies to the right
