Chemistry Of The P-block Flashcards
Define amphoteric
Ions can react with and act as both a base and acid, reacting to forms salt and water in neutralisation reaction
What is the Inert Pair Effect?
The tendency of the outermost s2 pair of electrons in am atom to remain unshared in compounds, leading to a lower oxidation state
This occurs in groups 3,4, and 5.
What 2 p-block elements have amphoteric behaviour?
Al / Al3+
Pb / Pb2+
What is the Octet Rule ?
Atoms with an atomic number below 20 tend to combine so that their valence shells each have 8 electrons.
What are the exceptions to The Octet Rule?
If molecules have an odd number of electrons
If the money contains atoms which have more than 8 electrons
Molecules contain atom with less than 8 electrons
Describe the stability of oxidation states changes down Group 4?
In group 4, stability of the +4 oxidation state reduces down the group, whilst stability of the +2 oxidation state increases down the group
Describe how the stability of oxidation states changes down the Group 5
In group 5, stability of the +5 oxidation states changes reduces down the group
