Equilibrium constant Kp for homogeneous systems Flashcards
what state are all products and reactants in for Kp
all products and reactants are gaseous
what units is Kp measured in
Pa
give an equation for finding the mole fraction of a gas in a mixture
number of moles of a gas/ total number of moles of gas in the mixture
why do you need to calculate the mole fraction
to calculate the partial pressure of the mixture of gas
give an equation for calculating the partial pressure in a mixture
mole fraction x total pressure of the mixture
what are the steps for working Kp of a reaction when given initial and equilibrium moles
- work out all the equilibrium moles for the reactants and products
- add all these values to find the total moles at equilibrium
- divide each the equilibrium moles by the total equilibrium moles
- multiply each value by the total pressure, given in the question
- substitute the correct values into equation for Kp of that reaction equation
what does le chateliers principle state?
if a factor that effects the equilibria is altered, the position of equilibria will shift to oppose the changes
what happens to the equilibrium if the temperature of a reaction is increased
the equilibrium will shift to favour the endothermic reaction, to oppose the change and decrease the temperature
what happens to Kp if a change in temp shifts the equilibrium
Kp will increase of decreases, depending on the Kp equation for that reaction
what will happen to equilibrium, if the pressure is increased
the equilibrium will shift towards the side of the equation with the least moles, to oppose the change and decrease the pressure
what effect does adding a catalyst have on Kp
it will have no effect on Kp. the rate of forward and reverse reaction both increase at the same rate
