Equilibrium Flashcards
State Le Chatelier’s principle (defo on test!) (L.C)
When a system at equilibrium is subjected to a stress such as a change in temperature, pressure or concentration the system will alter to oppose the effect of the stress.
What is meant by chemical equilibrium? (L.C)
A system is said to have reached a state of equilibrium when the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction.
What is meant by dynamic state? (L.C)
Both the forward and reverse reactions occur at the same time.
Le Chatelier’s principle predicts best yields in a certain equilibrium process at low temperatures and high pressures. Suggest a reason why there conditions might not be used industrially. (L.C)
When temperature is too low it gives low rate (slow reaction).
When pressure is too high it is unsafe (costly).
Why is a chemical equilibrium described as dynamic? (L.C)
As the reaction has not stopped / reaction continuing
Identify one industrial problem associated with the use of high pressures. (L.C)
High building costs / danger of leaks
