Equilibrium Flashcards
A reversible Reaction
The product reacts to give back the reactants (i.e goes both directions)
Dynamic State
The reactants are continously forming products and the products are continously forming reactants
Chemical Equilbrium
A state of dynamic balance in a reversable reaction where the state of the forward reaction is the same as the rate of the reverse reaction
Haber Bosch Process
N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3
When haber bosch process is in dynamic equilibrium all three substances are constantly being formed however the concentration of the substances remains constant
Le chatelier’s principle
If a stress is a applied to a system at equilbrium, the system moves in such a way as to relieve the stress
Causes of Stress
1) Change in temperature
2) Change in pressure
3)Change in concentration
Le Chatelier:Temperature
Increasing T, Equilibrium shifts in endothermic reaction
2) Decreasing T, equilibrium shift in exothermic reaction
Le Chatelier: Pressure
Increase in pressure, equilibrium shifts to side with fewest number of moles
Le Chatelier: Concentration
Increase C, Equilibrium shifts to other side and reduces C to reduce stress
Decrease C, equilibrium shifts to side C was on to reduce stress
Equilibrium : Catalyst
-No effect on equilibrium
-Speeds up rate at which system reaches equilibrium
-Catalyst affects both sides equally so has no effect on equilibrium position
