Chemistry Acids +Bases Flashcards
Acid ( Arhennius)
A substance that dissolves in water to form H+ ions
Base(Arhennius)
Substance that dissolves in water to form OH- ions
Strong Acid + Weak Acid(Arhennius)
Strong: A substance that almost completely dissolves in water to form H+ ions (HCl)
Weak: A substance that only slightly dissosciates to form H+ ions (CH3COOH)
Strong + Weak Base (Arhennius)
Strong: A substnace that almost completely dissociates in water to form Oh- ions (Hydroxides
Weak: A substance that only sdlightly dissosciates in water to form OH- ions (NH3)
Limitations to Arhennius Theory
1) H+ ions do not exist on their own in aqueous solution
2) NH3 cannot be considered a base ( No O no OH-)
3)Arhennius definitions limited to aqueuous solutions
Conjugate Acid-Base Pair
Any pair consisting of an acid and a base that differ by a proton
e.g
-An acid forms a conjugate base after it has donated a proton
-A base forms a conjugate acid after it has accepted a proton
Rules for acid to conjugate base
Decrease h by 1
Decrease charge by 1
Relative strength of acids and bases
-A strong acid has a weak conjugate base
- A weak acid has a strong conjugate base
Neutralisation
A reaction between an acid and a base forming salt and water
Eg(NaOH +HCL – NaCl + H20
Salt
Substance formed when a H+ ion from an acid is replaced by a metal or ammonium ion
