Equilibrium Flashcards
What is equilibrium?
When both reactants and products remain at constant state and amount over a period of time
What type of brackets are used for Kp?
Circular brackets ( )
What type of brackets are used for Kc/K?
Square brackets [ ]
What is the ideal gas equation?
pV = nRT
p = pressure in Pa
V = Volume in m^3
n = Number of moles
R = Gas constant
T = Temperature
What is the standard temperature?
273.15 Kelvin
Does equilibrium favour the left or right when K is larger than 1?
Favours the products right side
Does equilibrium favour the left or right when K is less than 1?
Favours the reactants left side
Where does equilibrium shift when:
There is too much reactants
Shifts right and favours the products side
Where does equilibrium shift when:
There is too much products
Shifts left and favours the reactants side
Where does equilibrium shift when:
The temperature is increases
Favours the endothermic direction ( +ΔH)
Where does equilibrium shift when:
The temperature is decreased
Favours the exothermic direction ( -ΔH)
How do we know which side is which?
If the forward reaction is exothermic ( -ΔH) then the backward reaction is endothermic ( +ΔH)
Where does equilibrium shift when:
Pressure is increased
Favours the side with fewer moles
Where does equilibrium shift when:
Pressure is decreased
Favours the side with more moles
