Equilibria ZSa EMa RMc Flashcards
What is homogeneous equilibrium?
An equilibrium in which all the reactants are in the same state.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
The rate of the two opposing reactions are equal, when the system has no further tendency to change.
When increasing the pressure which side of the reaction is favored?
The side with the fewest gas molecules.
What is the effect of using a catalyst?
It increases the rate of reaction by providing an alternative route with a lower activation energy, therefore equilibrium is reached quicker.
When increasing the pressure which side of the reaction is favored?
The side with the fewest gas molecules
When increasing the the temperature which side of the reaction is favored?
The endothermic reaction
Which reaction does increasing the pressure favor in this reaction:
N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g)
Forwards reaction
What is heterogeneous equilibrium?
An equilibrium in which the reactants and products are in different states.
What is the equilibrium constant?
The ratio of concentrations when equilibrium is reached in a reversible reaction.
What is a closed system?
A system from which reactants and products cannot escape, and to which substances cannot be added. A chemical equilibrium is possible only in a closed system.
What is a reversible change?
A chemical reaction which can take place in both directions and so does not go to completion.
A mixture of reactants and products is obtained when the reaction reaches equilibrium.
The composition of the equilibrium mixture is the same whether the reaction starts from the substances on the left, or on the right of the equation.
What does a value of Kc closer to 1 tell us?
The concentration of reactants and products are similar and the position of eqm lies near to the center.
Why is menthol manufactured at 532K?
A lower temperature would increase yield but would take too long.
