Equilibria (including Kc calculations) Flashcards
Closed system
system in which no reactants or products can enter or leave
dynamic equlibrium
rates of forwards and backwards reactions are equal so the concentrations of all species remain constant
what is Le Chatelier’s principle
If conditions of reaction at equilibrium are changed then the position of the equilibrium moves to oppose that change
Effect of catalyst on equilibrium
Increases rate of both forward and backward reaction equally, does not change position of equilibrium just reaches it faster.
Provides alternate route for reaction with lower activation energy
Equilibria - temperature effect
If temp increases - system will try to decrease temp by shifting position of equilibrium in endothermic direction, to oppose the change
equilibria - pressure effect
If pressure increased - system will try to decrease pressure by shifting position of equilibrium to side with fewer gaseous moles, to oppose the change
Equilibria - concentration effect
conc increase - system will try to decrease conc by shifting position of equilibrium away from substance that has been added, to oppose change
