EQ4-4.6 Flashcards
What is meant by the long profile of a river?
It shows you the river course and the height it goes down by. Shows you the upper course, middle course and lower course
How does the river Eden’s landscape change along its long profile
(upper/middle/lower). Consider: channel shape, valley profile, gradient,
discharge, velocity and sediment size and shape?
In the upper course the river Eden is slow and small. The source is found in the upper course. The upper course is also very rocky and has a lot of water in contact with the rocks so its slower. The middle course is where the river has meanders and is getting more flat
What are the reasons for these changes? To the river landscape?
(Answer)
Compare hydraulic action with abrasion
Hydraulic action is pressure exerted by a liquid/water this gets into the cracks and puts pressure on them weakening them and breaking it down abrasion is when rocks are thrown into the bed and the bank.
How is a waterfall formed?
- More resistant rock lays over less resistant
- less resistant rock erodes more easily
- Eventually the overhang of the more resistant rock collapses under its own weight
How do interlocking spurs form?
- In the upper course of a river most of the erosion is downwards
- Freeze thaw weathering can form cracks in the rocks which weakens it
- The rocks become unstable and it slides
- This creates v shaped valleys which interlock
