EQ1 Tintagel + Dorset Flashcards
Context of tintagel
-Located in North Cornwall
What is the coastline composed of?
-Old slate, formed under great pressure
How does geology control the coastline in tintagel
-Faults are formed when the pressure to which a rock is subjected to exceeds its internal strength causing it to fracture.
-Fault can be exploited by sea to form micro features like at Tintagel.
Context of Dorset coastline
-It is a jurassic coastline (95 mile long)
-Located in Southern England
How does geology control the coastline at dorset?
-Durdle door is a natural arch, formed by a layer of hard limestone, standing almost vertically out of the sea.
-In concordant coastlines, rock strata or folds run parallel to coast like in south dorset.
Dorset- how geology controls coastlines
Once marine action has breached the relatively resistant wall of limestone, it reaches weak shales which are easy to erode into COVES
- e.g, lulworth cove
Neighbouring coves can come together form a wide bay such as Mupe bay.
