Epithelium and connective tissues Flashcards
Learn and apply
Areolar CT function and location
Salt & water reserve and wraps organs.
Papillary layer of dermis & lamina propria.
Adipose CT function and location
Cushions, insulates & reserves fuel.
Hypodermis & around kidneys & eyes, also in breasts.
Reticular CT function and location
Provides soft internal skeleton within soft organs.
Lymph Organs.
Dense Elastic CT function and location
Expands with force then recoils.
Walls of large arteries, lungs & walls of bronchial tubes.
Dense Regular CT function and location
Able to withstand tension exerted in one direction.
Tendons & ligaments & Aponeuroses.
Dense Irregular CT function and location
Able to withstand tension exerted in many directions.
Reticular layer of Dermis & Fibrous capsules of organs.
Hyaline Cartilage function and location
Supports and reinforces with resilient cushioning properties.
Embryonic Skeleton - Ends of long bones - costal cartilage of ribs.
Elastic Cartilage function and location
Maintains shape while providing great flexibility.
Epiglottis, ear pinna.
Fibrocartilage function and location
Able to absorb strong compression, absorbs shock.
Pubic symphysis, intervertebral discs & menisci of knee.
Cuboidal epithelium description and location
Described as a cube-like shape, purpose is for secretion and absorption.
Found in the lining of the kidneys and small intestines.
Columnar epithelium description and location
Described as tall column-shaped, purpose is for secretion.
Found in the lining of the stomach and small intestine.
Pseudo stratified epithelium description and location
Looks stratified but is not; cells are connected but vary in height. Purpose is for protection and secretion.
Found in the lining of the respiratory tract.
Function of protection in epithelial tissues
Protects from harmful substances and pathogens.
Example: Skin protects from the environment.
Function of secretion in epithelial tissues
Secretes various substances such as mucus, sweat, hormones.
Example: Sweat glands secrete sweat to cool the body.
Function of absorption in epithelial tissues
Absorbs nutrient substances from the environment.
Example: Small intestines absorb nutrients.
Function of excretion and filtration in epithelial tissues
Excretes waste products from the body.
Function of sensory in epithelial tissues
Senses stimuli from the environment.
Example: Taste buds.
Types of epithelial tissues
Two types: Simple epithelial (single layer) and Stratified epithelium (two or more layers).
Squamous epithelium description and location
Described as flat, scale-like cells, purpose is to protect and absorb.
Found on the lining of the lungs and blood vessels.
