Q

Can a tissue be a component (part) of another tissue?

A

No, think of a quilt of all 4 types of tissues. They can surround each other, but they aren’t actually one thing.

Q

What are the 7 general characteristics of all epithelia?

A

I BAC SPA

  1. Cellularity: Composed almost entirely of cells (crowded)
  2. Specialized cell contacts (cell junctions)
  3. Polarity (the two sides are different) Made up of apical = toward space (top), and basal = toward attachment (bottom) EX: goblet cell = secretes mucus
  4. Basement membrane (anchors epithelium to the underlying connective tissue)
  5. Ability to regenerate quickly (a cut)
  6. Avascular = not associated with blood vessels
  7. Innverated = associated with nerve cell processes
