Epithelium Flashcards
1
Q
Histology
A
The study of tissues
2
Q
Can a tissue be a component (part) of another tissue?
A
No, think of a quilt of all 4 types of tissues. They can surround each other, but they aren’t actually one thing.
3
Q
Definition of epithelium =?
A
Tissue that covers the outer body (skin, the surface of the eye, etc.) OR lines a body cavity (internal surfaces, such as your cheek)
4
Q
What does the epithelium often form?
A
Glands
5
Q
What are the 7 general characteristics of all epithelia?
A
I BAC SPA
- Cellularity: Composed almost entirely of cells (crowded)
- Specialized cell contacts (cell junctions)
- Polarity (the two sides are different) Made up of apical = toward space (top), and basal = toward attachment (bottom) EX: goblet cell = secretes mucus
- Basement membrane (anchors epithelium to the underlying connective tissue)
- Ability to regenerate quickly (a cut)
- Avascular = not associated with blood vessels
- Innverated = associated with nerve cell processes
6
Q
Definition of apical =?
A
Toward space (outward facing)
7
Q
Definition of innervated =?
A
Associated with nerve cell processes
8
Q
Definition of avascular =?
A
Not associated with blood vessels
9
Q
Definition of basal =?
A
Toward attachment (bottom layer)
