Epithelial Transport Flashcards
In epithelial, what are the 3 transmembrane proteins required for absorption of glucose generally?
What transmembrane proteins are required for secretion of fluids? What is the rate limiting step/regulated step?
Define intestinal blockage from cystic fibrosis.
When there is insufficient, intestinal fluid secretion.
What is the result of insufficient pancreatic secretion?
** chronic pancreatitis ** (reoccurring inflammation of pancreas that leads to progressive loss of tissue.)
** pancreatic insufficiency ** (loss of ability to produce enough digestive enzymes.)
Malabsorption
Failure to thrive
Also related: diabetes mellitus.
Define endocrine secretion.
Secretion to the internal environment. (Blood plasma) secretion hormones!
Define exocrine secretion.
Secretion to the external environment. (Enzyme precursor)
What happens to someone with cystic fibrosis in their respiratory system? Why?
Thick Mucus
Increased infection
Lack of mucus clearance.
Tissue damage in airways.
Decrease in ventilation.
Due to Insufficient fluid secretion, can’t flush out mucus from lungs.
What is, and how does CFTR correctors work?
Increases expression of CFTR protein on cell surface.
They work by directly interacting with the CFTR protein to improve its folding and trafficking to the apical plasma membrane .
What is, and how does CFTR protentiator work?
Improve function of defective CFTR channel.
CFTR potentiators interact directly with the CFTR protein to improve channel opening.
