Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 types of tissue in the human body?
Epithelium, Connective, Nervous, Muscle
What is the main function of epithelial tissues?
To line body surfaces
external surfaces = skin
internal surfaces = tubes and cavities
Form a barrier between different environments
What do tight junctions do?
Create an impermeable water-tight seal between adjacent cells
What are desmosomes?
Strong anchoring junctions that hold cells together. Lots of desmosomes in the skin.
What do desmosomes do?
Provide the tissue with strength. Allow tissue to stretch and maintain contact
Name 5 functions of epithelium
- Barrier function
- Physical protection to mechanical abrasion
- Allow diffusion of gases
- Absorption of nutrients
- Secretion of sweat, enzymes, hormones, mucus
Name the 3 shapes of cells
Squamous, Cuboidal, Columnar
What does psuedostratified mean?
Fake stratified - single layer of cells but looks like multiple layers of cells due to arrangement of nuclei
Where is stratified transitional epithelium found?
In the bladder
Name some of the apical specialisations that can be found on epithelium
Microvilli, Cilia, Keratin
What do microvilli do?
Increase surface area to facilitate absorption
What do cilia do?
Movement of particulate matter over surface of epithelium. Beating motion.
What is the function of keratin?
Protective. Gives skin a waterproof and protective function. Keratin is a tough protein.
What is oral squamous cell carcinoma?
Cancer of the epithelium in the mouth
Define carcinoma
A malignant tumour arising from epithelial tissue
