Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Basement Membrane
A thin extracellular layer that is made up of 2 layers and is the base of all epithelial tissues.
Secretion
Formation and release of substances such as sweat, hormones, and saliva.
Absorption
Intake of fluids or other substances such as digested food from the intestinal tract.
Simple Squamous
Single layer of thin, flattened cells.
Function: diffusion + filtration
Location: air sacs in lungs + walls of capillaries.
Stratified squamous
Many layers of square-shaped cells. Cells at surface (older cells) become flattened.
Function: multi-layer squamous, functions in protection.
Location: skin and mouth.
Simple cuboidal
Single layer of cube shaped cells
Function: secretion and absorption
Location: found in kidney tubules and ducts, covers the ovaries.
Stratified cuboidal
2-3 layers of cuboidal cells.
Function: protection
Location: lines ducts of mammary, sweat, and saliva glands.
Simple columnar
Single layer of cells that are longer than they are wide.
Function: secretion and absorption.
Location: lining of uterus, stomach, intestines
** may contain goblet cells (produces mucus) and cilia
Psuedostratified columnar
Single layer of columnar shape, shape and nuclei are uneven which give it a false layered look (pseudo -fake)
Function: movement, secretion, protection
Location: lining of trachea
Stratified columnar
Multiple column shaped cells
Function: protection, and secretion
Location: male urethra, and parts of the pharynx (rare in the body)
Transitional
Stretchable
Changes in response to increase tension.
Cells change shape between squamous and cuboidal (the cells have a messy shape to them)
Function: blocks diffusion
Location: lining of urinary bladder
Glandular
A group of cells or single cells that secret substances into ducts, onto a surface, or into the blood in the absence of ducts.
Exocrine
Secrets products, ducts that empty onto skin.
Location: sweat, oil, salivary, and earwax glands.
Endocrine
Secrets hormones into bloodstream.
Location: pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, and testis.
Function: hormones power many body functions and maintain homeostasis.
Ciliated
Something covered in microscopic projections that look like tiny hairs.
