Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
What are the 4 major tissue types?
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscular
- Nervous
What does epithelial tissue do? (3 points)
- covers body surface (absorbs and secretes)
- lines hollow organs
- forms glands
What does connective tissue do?
Protect/support the body and its organs
What does muscular tissue do? (3 points)
- moves/generates heat
- contracts to cause movement
- skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle
What does nervous muscle do? (2 points)
- primary form of communication
- brain, spinal cord and nerves
What are the two divisions of epithelial tissue?
- covering and lining
- glandular
What are the main roles of epithelial tissue? (4 points)
- has own nerve supply
- is avascular ( rely on blood vessels of the adjacent connective tissue)
- form boundaries
- has high rate of cell division
What is an apical surface?
A free surface, the outside skin is free to the environment
What is the name for single layered epithelial tissue?
Simple
What is the name for single layered but looks like multiple layered epithelial tissue?
Pseudostratified
What is the name for multiple layered epithelial tissue?
Stratified
What is the name for flattened epithelial tissue?
Squamous
What is the name for cube shaped epithelial tissue?
Cuboidal
What is the name for column shaped epithelial tissue?
Columnar
What are the functions of simple epithelial tissue?
Functions in diffusion, secretion and absorption
What are the functions of stratified epithelial tissue?
Functions in preventing water and tear
What are the functions of squamous shaped epithelial tissue?
Allow easy passage of materials right across the layer
What are the functions of cuboidal and columnar shaped epithelial tissue?
Specialise for secretion and absorption
What is the function of transitional epithelium?
Allows urinary organs to stretch and maintain protective lining while holding variable amounts of fluid without rupturing.
What are the two types of glandular epithelial tissue?
- exocrine
- endocrine
What is the function of exocrine epithelial? (3 points)
- generates a secretion which then empties via a duct onto a surface
- function is to produce substances I.e sweat, oil, saliva
- location, sweat and oil glands, salivary glands and pancreas
What is endocrine epithelia? (3 points)
- secretes hormones and directly diffuse into blood without using ducts
- function, hormones regulate metabolic and physiological activities to maintain homeostasis
- location, pituitary glands, thyroid and parathyroid glands
