Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
3 types of epithelial cells
Columnar, Cuboidal and Squamous cells
What are epithelial cells connected together by?
Tight junctions
What are pseudostratified columnar epithelium?
A single layered, columnar tissue with nuclei arranged so it looks like the tissue is multi layered
What are the 6 types of epithelial tissue?
Simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, stratified squamous, pseudostratified columnar, stratified cuboidal and transitional epithelium
Actin
Anchoring protein
Desmosome
Intermediate filaments for structural support
Hemidesmosome
Help glue the cell to basement membrane
Connexin
Help with communication of epithelial cells
Claudin and Occludin
Important for the polarity of epithelia
Transcellular transport
Absorbs and secretes nutrients and pathogens
Paracellular movement
Travel through the intercellular space of epithelial cells
Role of tight junctions
Be a barrier, a fence to maintain the asymmetric distribution of lipids and proteins in the apical and basal membranes and to be a gate to let some molecules pass easier than others
