Epithelial Membranes Flashcards
quiz 2
Dry membrane exposed to air
Covers the surface of the skin
-Outermost Protective boundary
Construction:
-Epidermis is composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
-Dermis is mostly dense fibrous connective tissue.
Cutaneous (skin)
Moist membranes
Lines body cavities that open to the exterior of the body
-Esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum
-urinary tracts
-reproductive tracts
Adapted for Absorption and Secretion
Construction
-Epithelium type depends on site
-Loose connective tissue (lamina propria)
Mucous Membranes (mucosae)
Line body cavities that are closed to the exterior of the body.
Occurs in pairs, seperated by serous fluid by serous by serous fluid, with a visceral and parietal layer.
Parietal- covers walls of the cavity
Visceral- covers walls outside of organs in the cavity
Serous Fluid- Allows organ to glide along a cavity wall
Construction:
-Simple squamous epithelium
-Aeolar connective tissue
* The specific names of the serous membranes depend on their locations.
-Specific serous membranes
*Peritoneum- Abdominal Cavity
*Pleura- Around Lungs
*Pericardium- Around Heart
serous membranes (serosae )
- Loose areolar connective tissue only (no epithelial tissue)
- Line fibrous capsules surrounding joints.
- Line bursae and tendon sheaths at joints.
- Provide a smooth surface.
- Secrete a lubricating fluid to cushion organs moving against each other during muscle activity. (secretive)
- Ligament
- Joint cavity -Contains synovial fluid
- Articular cavity
Synovial Membrane
