Epithelial Cells: Simple + Stratified Flashcards
Types of Simple Epi
- Simple Squamous Epithelium
- Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
- Simple Columnar Epithelium
Define Simple Squamous Epithelium
single layer of flat cells w/ disc shaped central nuclei and sparce cytoplasm
Function of Simple Squamous Epithelium
allows permeability of molecules/ gases by diffusion and filtration where protection is not important; secretes lubricating substances in serosae
SSE Location
Capillaries, alveoli (lungs), serous membrane, kidney glomeruli, lymphatic vessels
Define Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Single layer of cubed cells w/ large spherical central nuclei
Function of Simple Cuboidal Epi
to absorb/ secrete fluids and substances
Simple Cuboidal Epi location
Renal (kidney) tubules, ducts, follicles of the thyroid, secretory portions of small glands: ovary surface
Define Simple Columnar Epi
single layer of tall cells (longer than they are wide) round to oval nuclei toward basal surface
Function of Simple Columnar Epi
Usually allows molecules to pass through via active transport for absorption/secretion by ciliary action
Simple Columnar Epi Location
Most of GI tract, (microvilli), Uterine tubes (ciliated) and bronchioles (ciliated)
Characteristics of Simple Columnar Epi
Goblet cells
Brush Border
Define Goblet Cells
Secrete mucin which becomes mucus to lubricate and protect the epi.
Define Brush Border
aka microvilli
undistinguishable under light microscope; appearance “brush-like”
Define pseudostratified columnar Epi
single layer of cells w. nuclei at varying locations due to cell size/ shape to make it seem multiple layers; for protection and absorption/ secretion
Define Cilated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
goblet cells secrete mucin and cilia propels mucus
Location of pseudo
(upper) Respiratory tract
- Nasal cavity, trachea, bronchi
Types of Stratified Epi
- Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
- Nonkeratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
- Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
- Stratified Columnar Epithelium
- Transitional Epithelium
