Epithelia and Glands Flashcards
What are typical merocrine secretions?
Zymogens, sweat, mucous, lysozyme
True or false: Serous glands stain lightly.
False
True or false: Mucous glands stain lightly.
True
What are characteristics of serous glands?
Watery secretion
Abundant RER
Round nucleus
Cells well-stained
What are characteristics of mucous glands?
Thick secretions
Clear cytoplasm
Flat nucleus (artifact from preparation)
Cells poorly-stained
What are some characteristics of exocrine glands?
Maintain contact with surface epithelium; secretes into a lumen
What are some characteristics of endocrine glands?
Lose contact with surface epithelium; secrete into interstitial space
What does eosinophilic mean? What are eosinophilic things?
It means acid-loving, they are basic things (if something is eosinophilic, it’s basic)
What color do eosinophilic things stain and what charge do they have?
Pink, positive charge
What is hematoxylin? What are things that like to bind to it?
It’s a base; acids like to bind to it
What color do things that like hematoxylin stain?
Purple, negative charge
What classification of layering do myoepithelial cells have? Are they eosinophilic or hematoxyphilic?
Pseudostratified
Eosinophilic
