52
Q

What is stained by Haematoxylin?

A

Stains acidic things blue, such as cell nuclei or RNA

53
Q

What is stained by Eosin?

A

Stains alkaline things/proteins pink.
These include cytoplasm and colloidal proteins, as well as extracellular fibres such as collagen and elastic.
BUT stains KERATIN orange/red
(watery extra-cellular jelly or fats don’t stain)

54
Q

What is stained by Alcian Blue?

A

Stains these blue:

  • Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) rich structures - found in all CT and extracellular matrix
  • Mucous goblet cells
  • Mast cell granules
  • Cartilage Matrix
55
Q

What is stained by Iron Haematoxylin?

A

Stains nuclei and elastic fibres - black

56
Q

What is stained by Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS)?

A

Stains hexose sugars (especially those of complex carbohydrate containing structures e.g. goblet cell mucins, cartilage matrix, glycogen, basement membranes and glycocalyx)
Magenta (dark pink)

57
Q

What is stained by Toluidine Blue?

A

Stains nuclei, ribosomes, cytoplasm - dark blue
Stains cartilage matrix, mast cell granules - pale blue
Stains GAG-rich components - bright purple

58
Q

RESP: False vocal cords/Vestibular Folds

A

Respiratory epithelium
