Epithelia Flashcards
Name four types of simple epithelium.
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar and pseudostratified.
What is the difference between simple and stratified epithelium?
Simple is just one layer of cells and stratified is several layers of cells.
Define epithelia.
Sheets of contiguous cells, of varied embryonic origin, that cover the external surface of the body and line internal surfaces.
Name the 4 types of stratified epithelia.
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar and transitional.
What is the epithelia attached to? I.e. What is directly beneath it.
The basement membrane.
List 3 characteristics of the basement membrane.
Thin, flexible and acellular.
What is the order you would find the following in, from top to bottom? Basement membrane, epithelia and connective tissue.
Epithelia
Basement membrane
Connective tissue
What type of epithelia is the endothelium and where is it found?
Simple squamous epithelia lining all vascular elements. Found at arteries, veins, capillaries and lymphs.
Where is the mesothelium found and what type of epithelia is it?
Simple squamous epithelia lining the pleural sac, pericardial sac and peritoneum.
Where is the zonula occludens and zonula adherents found?
Apical membrane of epithelia.
What is the gap junction made up of?
Zonula occludens and zonula adherens.
What is the difference in length between stereocilia and microvilli?
Stereocilia are longer than microvilli.
