Episodic memory Tulving 1972 Flashcards

1
Q

what did Tulving say about long term memory?

A

that there were clear distinctions between types of LTM and this can be divided into sub-groups.

Q

what is meant by episodic memory?

A

this is the memory of events that we have experienced in our lives and that are personal to us.
for example; our first day of school, or a birthday party.

Q

what is meant by semantic memory?

A

it is the responsibility of the semantic memory to store info about the world such as general knowledge and factual info.

Q

what is meant by procedural memory?

A

this is learning how to do things e.g. playing the piano or riding a bike.

Q

which subgroup requires time referencing in order to remember?

A

episodic memory, semantic memory is does not necessarially need time referencing to remeber something. e.g. 2 + 2 = 4

Q

what study supports that the long term memory is split into two?

A

• HM could not transfer any memories into his LTM after an operation that removed his
hippocampus, and would forget things as soon as they left his STM. However, he was able to
remember (and got better with practice) how to draw a star pattern, although he had no
recollection of learning it, showing that there is a distinction between procedural and declarative
memory.

Q

godden and badeley?

A

Godden & Baddeley (1975) found divers recalled 50% less words when asked to recall them to a different environment to where there were learnt – this supports context cues

Q

problems with generalisability?

A

the use of case studies such as HM and other brain damaged people is hard to apply to everyone as they are such rare cases.
