Inflammation of the outermost layer of sclera (below conjunctiva)

A
Young/middle aged
Inflammatory conditions

Symptoms of episcleritis
A
Patch of redness in lateral sclera (likely) OR diffuse sclera redness
No/mild pain
Dilated spiscleral vessels

Management of episcleritis
A
self limiting within 1-2 weeks
analgesoa
lubricating eye drops
if severe -> steroid eye drops

Test to differentiate between scleritis and episcleritis?
A
Phenylephrine eye drops
Causes blanching of episcleral vessels causing redness to disappear
No effect on scleral vessels
