What is an antigen?
A foreign substance recognized by the cells of the immune system and eventually destroyed
What is an allergic reaction?
Allergens cause an abnormal response by the immune system.
What is the weight cut off to determine the adult or the junior doseage?
65 lbs
What are the doseage amounts of the adult and the junior epi?
Adult - .3 mg Junior - .15 mg
What are the two key categories of signs and symptoms for anaphylaxis?
Respiratory compromise and Shock/hypoperfusion
What are the skin signs associated with anaphylaxis?
hives, rash, itching (urticaria) flushed or red skin (erythemia) swelling to face, lips, tongue, hands feet cyanosis pallor, diaphoresis
What are the respiratory signs associated with anaphylaxis?
SOB, chest tightness, tachypnea, wheezing, stridor, two or three word sentences, partial or complete airway occlusion.
What are the cardiovascular system signs associated with anaphylaxis?
Tachycardia, hypotension, no radial pulse
What are the Central Nervous System signs of anaphylaxis?
Increased anxiety, seizures, unresponsiveness
What are the GI signs of anaphylaxis?
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, swallowing difficulty
What two things do you check on the epinephrine before administering?
Expiration date and cloudiness/discoloration
How long do you hold the injector against the site before removing?
10 seconds
What are the steps after administering the epi?
Discard the injector in the sharps container and massage the injector site for 30 seconds. Monitor vitals and document on the F20B
What is the cut off age to administer epi without a prescription?
18 years old
