what is epilepsy
brain disorder characterised by an enduring predisposition to epileptic seizures
what are the diagnositic criteria for seizures
more than 2 unprovoked epileptic seizures, usually within a year or two
can be diagnosed after 1 seizure if there is a high probability of more
can do tests but many people have normal results
what are the consequences of epilepsy
neurobiological
social
cognitive
psychological
how can seizures occur
provoked
symptomatic
unprovoked (epilepsy)
describe the tonic phase of seizures
stiffen up
tongue bite is common, this doesn’t tend to happen in other types
describe the clonic phase of seizures
neat convulsions, very rhythmic
3 types of seizure classification
genetic generalised epilepsy (GGE), software problems, also referred to as idiopathic or primary generalised
focal onset, hardware problems, previously called cryptogenic, lesion localisation and partial epilepsies

what are the treatments for epilepsy
conservative
dietary
medications
surgery
what should you take into account when prescribing drugs
use one drug
treat for at least 2 years before giving up
