Partial seizures =
focal onset w/ feature referable to part of one hemisphere
Simple partial seizure =
awareness unimpaired
focal symptoms
no post ictal symptoms
Complex partial seizure =
awareness impaired
focal symptoms
post ictal symptoms
First line treatments for partial seizures
Carbamezipine / lamotrgrine
Second line for partial seizures
Sodium valproate
Primary generalised seizures =
Simultaneous inappropriate electrical discharge across the whole cortex. no localising features.
Tonic-clonic seizures present as -
Loss of consciousness, limbs stiffen then jerk. Post ical confusion and drowsiness.
First line treatment for generalised seizures
Sodium valproate
Myoclonic seizure presents as -
Sudden jerking of a part of the body
Status epilepticus =
seizure lasting longer than 30min
Slow IV bolus of what in SE?
Lorazepam (2-4mg)
Blood tests in SE
FBC, U&Es, LFTs, Glucose, Ca2+ and toxicology screen
If seizures not stopped by first infusion give?
phenytoin / kepra / sodium valproate
What should be given with AED in pregnancy?
5mg folate a day
