Epigenetics Key Terms Flashcards
Community
Where an individual lives/works/plays
Waddington
he coined the term “epigenetics”
Lipton
he discovered that identical stem cells adapt differently based on environmental factors
Epigenetics
the study of how biologic (internal) and environmental (external) signals determine gene expressions
Internal environment
the interaction of attitudes, thoughts, emotions, feelings, beliefs, and reactions or responses to events that directly affect our physiologic function
External environment
includes variables such as air, water, food, environmental toxins, social network, community, sense of purpose in life, spiritual beliefs
Geographic pathology
concerned with diseases endemic to certain areas of the world, most often parasitic and infectious diseases that seemed unique to individual geographic regions.
Occupational disease
chemical agents are mediators of a variety of tissue changes and the recognition that many of these causative agents are environmental contaminants
Environmental pathology
disease caused by contaminants
Social network
refers to the web of social relationships that link us together
Cultural relativity
behavior must be judged first in relation to the context of the culture in which it occurs
Transnational competence
teaches the health care professional how to address issues of physical and mental health along with experiences related to geographic dislocation and adaption to unfamiliar settings
Examples of damage-based explanation of aging
free radicals, wear and tear theory, error theory
Examples of program-based explanation of aging process
gene mutation theory, genetic control theory, planned obsolescence theory
Telomere or telomerase theory of aging
shortening of telomeres in the process of DNA replication during cell division determines how long a cell functions and when cellular apoptosis occurs
