epigenetics Flashcards
what does epigenetic mean
the change to the gene without change of the dna base sequence, caused by the environment
what does increased methylation mean
- methyl group attaches to the dna sequence of a gene
-methyl group attaches to the cytosine base when next to guanine
-inhibits transcription, preventingbindming of transcription factors to the promoter sequence so gene isn’t expressed
what does decreased acetylation of histones do
-chromatin is formed from dna being wrapped around proteins called histones
-the histones can be modified by removing or addition of acetyl
-when there’s increased A , histones r less condensed, transcription of genes more likely as genes are more accessible to transcription factors
what regulates transcription
siRNA , RNA
how can epigenetic cause disease
what can epigenetic do
be reversed by drugs to target specific cells .
