Epidermis Flashcards
Layers of the epidermis:
Come Let’s Get Sun Burned – STRATUM CORNEUM > STRATUM LUCIDUM > STRATUM GRANULOSUM > STRATUM SPINOSUM > STRATUM BASALE
STRATUM CORNEUM:
MOST SUPERFICIAL; 20-30 LAYERS OF ANUCLEATE SQUAMOUS
STRATUM LUCIDUM:
2-3 LAYERS OF DEAD KERATINOCYTES; only found IN THICK SKIN (PALMS AND SOLES); FLAT KERATINOCYTES; LOOK CLEAR UNDER MICROSCOPE
STRATUM GRANULOSUM:
3-5 LAYERS OF KERATINOCYTES; PROCESS OF keratinization BEGINS HERE (CELLS DIE); DISTINCT GRANULES IN CYTOPLASM
STRATUM SPINOSUM:
SEVERAL LAYERS OF POLYGONAL KERATINOCYTES ATTACHED TO NEIGHBORS BY DESMOSOMES; DAUGHTER CELLS OF BASALE; HAS EPIDERMAL DENDRITIC CELLS
STRATUM BASALE:
SINGLE LAYER OF CUBOIDAL/COLUMNAR SHAPE CELLS, CONNECT TO THE BASEMENT MEMBRANE; WILL FIND KERATINOCYTES, MELANOCYTES, AND TACTILE CELLS; cell division HAPPENS HERE
What cells are found in the epidermis? (4 of them) What do they do?
Keratinocytes – most abundant; melanocytes – make melanin; epidermal dendritic cells – immune response; and tactile cells – sensitive to touch
What is skin color a result of?
Hemoglobin in blood vessels of the dermis, melanin pigment, and carotene pigment
