Epidermal Levels Flashcards
Most superficial layer
20 to 30 layers of dead cells
Glycolipids in extracellular space
Stratum Corneum
A thin layer named for the abundant granules it contains
Lamellar granules contain a waterproofing glycolipid that is secreted into the extracellular space
Stratum Granulosum
Several cell layers
Thick web-like bundles of intermediate filaments made of a pre-keratin protein
It appears spiky
Dendritic cells may appear in this layer
Stratum Spinosum
A single row of cells immediately superficial to the dermis
It’s cells are constantly undergoing mitosis
Contains melanocytes and tactile (Merkel) cells
Stratum Basale
(Only found in thick skin)
A very thin, translucent band of flattened, dead keratinocytes with indistinct boundaries.
Stratum Lucidum
